Beginning as more of a conceptual think-tank, dedicated to exploring new ideas in design, the Studio has gradually become more focussed on production; furniture and everyday objects in small series, limited editions and made-to-order commissions. The Studio also takes on interior design projects, which have included restaurants, a hotel, retail stores and most recently, Maison Rabih Kayrouz, the flagship Beirut boutique of the Lebanese couturier.

Rana Begum received her Fine Art Degree in painting at the Chelsea College of Art and Design and her MFA in painting from the Slade School of Fine Art, both of London. Lodged between op-art and minimalism, Rana’s previous works drew its inspiration from repetitive geometric patterns within Islamic art and architecture. The result is a series of tightly controlled compositions, where impeccably applied colorful hard-edge lines are coated in a thick layer of glossy resin, to create seductively tactile reflective surfaces.
In more recent work, Rana draws inspiration from urban visual stimuli such as the abstract clashes of form and colour that can be seen in the city, and combines them with the traditional repetition of geometric form found in Islamic art. To view the work one is required to adjust their position for the work to unravel. It is in this visual movement that Rana creates a compelling visual language where by with the tiniest of movements the surrounding chaos aligns itself into a moment of symmetry.
After graduating at ISIA (Higher Institute for Artistic Industries) of Faenza with a thesis about the experimental use of paraffin waxes in lighting technology, starting from 2000 Carlo collaborated with the designers Paolo Zani, Stefano Gallizioli and Matteo Thun in their design studios based in Milan.
Since 2008 he works as an independent designer. He specialises in industrial design (furniture, light fittings, kitchen accessories and tableware), interior design, exhibition design and visual design identity.
Carlo’s collection of products includes beds, chairs, carpets, pitchers, candlesticks and coffee tables.
He is constantly interested in deepening the meaning of interaction between human beings and objects and the affective and emotional relationship that develops between them.
Bernard Touillon & Cécile Vaiarelli
Photographer & Journalist
A life shared out between Paris and the Mediterranean… Plays on light and shade will always have a role. Bernard initial taste for black and white with its specific constraints and contrasts gradually led him towards photography portraying ambiances and architecture for journalism and advertising.
From travel to photo shoots, his meticulous shots taken in natural daylight capture a stylized art of living, in which interior decor blends with outdoor furnishings, fabrics, design, museums… Innate sensitivity to light, nuances and materials underscore his compositions. From the start, he has always shown a preference for photographs presented as fragments of a staged scene.
Bernard’s partner, Cecile Vaiarelli, is a journalist and stylist. On her travels and articles, in tales and photos… a human adventure re-invented each day. Rooted in writing and a way of life fuelled by curiosity, the world of today sketches out that of tomorrow.
